Formed at the end of 2008 as a bedroom recording project, New York?s Small Black first made waves with their eponymous debut EP. New Chain, their debut LP, was predominantly realized in the seclusion of sleepy Delaware and then mixed by Nicolas Vernhes (Animal Collective, Dirty Projectors) in New York City. The group spent the hours in Delaware "trying to take the excitement and stimulus of NYC to a place far from distractions, where it could be organized properly." They have succeeded in melting together locked and popped drum-shudder, gauzy spirographic synths and subtly contagious, half-remembered melody into ebullient bursts of evocative, subliminal and thoroughly modern pop.
A thinker's party record? A party-hardy thinker's record? Not sure. All we know is that New Chain is one of the most involved, intriguing and effortlessly human collections of organic pop music you're likely to hear this or any other year.

Die Gruppe aus Brooklyn verschmilzt gekonnt bebende Drums, durchscheinende Synthies und subtil-ansteckende Melodien zu überschwänglichen Ausbrüchen von bewegendem, unterschwelligem und durch und durch modernem Pop. Etwas direkter und ausgefeilter als die Vorgänger-EP, bleibt SMALL BLACKs neues Album eine Weiterführung dieses gegensätzlichen Ethos - ein wahnsinniges Verschmieren der Grenzen zwischen Melancholie und Nostalgie, Spannung und Zelebration, unverfrorener Popmusik und Experimentierfreude. Grimy synths, broken beats, and bucolic vocals collide somewhere between early 90s house music and the gnarly soundscapes of Black Dice to forge a sound that's wholly unique and endlessly exciting. It's exceedlingly rare to find dance music that transcends the cold and robotic, but on Dark Rift Pictureplane does just that: churning out intricate electronic jams out of his near-legendary Denver warehouse space Rhinoceropolis. The music feels at once personal and cosmically expansive.
